Our Emergency Department team at Chelsea have recently piloted interventions called Fit to Sit, Navigation at Triage and Emergency Department led Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) service.
NHS England announced the Delivery Plan for Recovering Urgent and Emergency Care Services, which set out a number of schemes that our Trust are adopting to improve patient flow and patient experience. The SDEC and other pilots have demonstrated several benefits to our staff and the patients. The ultimate goal at our Trust was to run a hybrid model where there is joint working between Emergency Medicine and Acute medicine—together they will deliver same day emergency care to our patients.
Fit to Sit is an area created within the ED majors footprint. The patients triaged to this area are those who do not require continuous monitoring—this is determined following an initial assessment by the senior clinical team. This has positively influenced our ambulance handover waiting times. Navigation at Triage is an intervention supported by our senior nursing team. This has improved our time to triage/initial assessment.
Thank you to the team for piloting these new schemes to improve patient care and experience.
