Children’s outpatients

What we do

At Chelsea and Westminster and West Middlesex, children are seen in our outpatient departments for their appointments by GP referral, from A&E or after being an inpatient on a ward. At Chelsea and Westminster, they may also attend their outpatient department if they have been referred from another hospital for a specialist opinion.

Our specialties across both sites include cancer, neurology, ENT, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, endocrinology, cardiology and many more. We offer a blood test service within the department for children and young people of all ages attending our clinics. We also offer this service to children who have been referred by their GPs—this is by appointment only. To make an appointment please call the number below.

At Chelsea and Westminster there is a sensory room—a specialised fun space with a range of relaxing, child-centred activities that help babies, children and teenagers (including those with special needs) to cope with their hospital experience. This room is also used for individual play sessions for children who have high anxiety around procedures or treatments and require a calm environment, and for mothers to breastfeed their babies. There is a booking system in place to use the sensory room, and bookings are made on an assessment of priority for each individual patient. Wherever possible, we will try to accommodate for each patient’s needs.

We have teams of play specialists at both sites to support children. They use specialised play preparation and distraction techniques, together with normalising sensory sessions to help children understand and feel comfortable about the procedures that happen in healthcare settings and hospitals.

Our team

Our specialties are supported by a team of doctors, specialist nurses, dieticians, orthoptists, optometrist, orthopaedic and physiotherapy practitioners—all of whom specialise in children’s care. Within our team we also have reception staff and play specialists working together to ensure effective running of the clinics to provide support for parents, children and young people.
