Stroke & TIA services
Welcome to Stroke & TIA services
We know it can be a difficult and daunting time for people who have had a stroke, and for their families and carers.
We aim to answer any questions you or your family may have about Stroke or TIA and to help support you during your treatment and as you begin your life after stroke.
Who is involved in your care?
The Stroke and TIA service consists of consultants at both sites (Chelsea and Westminster Hospital and West Middlesex University Hospital) supported by a wide range of specialist medical, nursing, and highly skilled allied health professionals, who make up the team including Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language Therapy, Dietetics, Clinical Psychologists and Pharmacy.
What we offer
Chelsea and Westminster Hospital:
The Acute Stroke Unit (Nell Gwynne Ward) at the Chelsea Site has 20 dedicated stroke patient beds and 4 Neurology beds. Specialist Neuro-rehabilitation therapists, Stroke specialist doctors and nurses support the ward.
West Middlesex Hospital:
Redlees Acute Stroke Unit dedicates 22 beds to the Stroke Service, which is supported by neuro- rehabilitation therapists, nurses and Stroke specialist doctors.
Trust-wide:
Both acute stroke units work closely with the Neurophysiology, Radiology and Cardiology departments, HASUs, and the Royal Brompton Hospital. We also provide specialist postgraduate and undergraduate training.
The Chelsea Site and the West Middlesex Site each have a Stroke Clinical Nurse Specialist offering additional support to the Stroke Service, patients, and their loved ones.
We provide TIA and Stroke inpatient and outpatient services in line with the national guidelines. Our specialist stroke consultants hold joint appointments with Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, and provide stroke care and thrombolysis/thrombectomy services at our local Hyper-Acute Stroke Unit (HASU) based at Charing Cross Hospital.
A consultant-led TIA clinic (Mon–Fri) that aims to treat patients as day cases in the Outpatient Department (OPD 8 - West Middlesex Site) and Ambulatory Emergency Care (Chelsea Site), assessing patients and completing complex investigations (including radiology) and same-day treatment.
All stroke inpatients receive follow-up appointments following discharge.
We offer patient and GP advice concerning access to service or patient management.
Referrals
GP referrals to the stroke service should be submitted via ERS.
Referrals to the TIA clinic should be emailed to the relevant TIA clinic, using the referral form which can be found here.
