At Chelsea Pain Centre, we are a team of professionals specialising in helping patients manage their pain. The department strives to deliver a comprehensive and effective pain management service utilising evidence-based therapeutic interventions that best meet the needs of our patients.
Services we offer include:
- Inpatient Pain Management: Helping patients admitted to hospital for surgery to effectively manage their pain, this consultant-led service evaluates and manages post-surgical and other acute inpatient needs—read more about inpatient pain management
- Outpatient Pain Management: Helping patients with a variety of long-term pain conditions, we take a multi-professional approach and utilise a wide range of interventions and specialist services (see below)
The interventions and specialist services we offer include:
- Spinal interventions including epidurals, nerve root blocks, diagnostic and radiofrequency facet injections
- Medications review
- Lower Back Pain Triage Service—based on a multidisciplinary team network for patients with lower back pain
- Opioid management clinic
- TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation)
- Spinal Cord Stimulation (pulsed electrical signals to the spinal cord to help with certain persistent pain conditions)
- Dorsal Root Ganglion Stimulation
- Pain Management Programmes (PMPs)—therapy-led services to help people learn skills to better manage their pain and reduce its impact on their everyday life
- Pain Specialist Physiotherapy—to help patients better understand their pain and to improve function and quality of life, utilising a variety of educational and physical strategies
- Pain Specialist Psychology—to help patients better understand the role of thoughts, feelings and behaviours in response to pain, we utilise a variety of strategies to help patients make life around the pain bigger
- Specialist services for Survivors of Torture
- Specialist Fibromyalgia Clinic
- Specialist Neuropathic Pain Clinic
- Tertiary Paediatric and transitional pain service (children and adolescents with consultant referral only)
- Community pain support clinics—providing pain clinics for community musculoskeletal services

Our team
Our Clinical Lead for Chronic Pain is Dr Ian D Goodall, who works alongside our other consultants, specialist doctor, clinical specialist nurses, an advanced pain trainee (specialist registrar) and specialist pain physiotherapists and psychologists.
