Co-dydramol
You have been discharged with a medication to help with pain.
There are several types of painkillers and this information will explain what you need to know.
Always tell your doctor and nurse if you are allergic to any medications.
What is Co-dydramol?
Co-dydramol is a medication containing paracetamol and dihydrocodeine. Dihydrocodeine is a type of medicine called an opiate. The medicines morphine and tramadol are also opiates.
How often should I take it?
Adults should take 1 or 2 tablets up to four times a day as needed. Do not take more than 8 in 24 hours.
Elderly people should take 1 tablet up to four times a day as needed.
What are the side effects?
The main side effects reported are feeling sick, being sick, dizziness, sleepiness and constipation.
Can I drive?
It is illegal to drive in England and Wales if you have legal medications in your body that make you unfit to drive. If you follow the instructions given to you by a doctor and your ability to drive is not impaired then you can drive.
Can I take other medication?
You should not take ANY other medications that contain paracetamol whilst taking co-dydramol. Do not take this medication if you are already being prescribed opiate medications. You should avoid alcohol whilst taking this medication.
What else should I be aware of?
If you develop difficulty breathing, throat swelling or a rash you should seek urgent medical attention.
