Day surgery information for patients at West Mid

Proposed date of surgery:

Surgical Procedure:

____________________________

Before you come into hospital

Medicines

You should take all your regular medicines on the morning of your operation unless you have specifically been told not to. This will have been discussed with you in the pre assessment clinic or by your surgeon. Taking medication you have been asked not to may result in your operation being cancelled. Please bring all your medication in to hospital on the day of surgery.

Smoking

Try to cut back or stop smoking before your surgery as smoking slows healing.

People who smoke are also much more likely to have complications such as infection after their surgery.

On the day of your operation

Come to the Elective Surgery Waiting Area located in Basement of East Wing nearer Park Road entrance.

It is very important you follow these instructions so that you can proceed with general anaesthesia as safely as possible. Fasting for longer than the recommended times is of no benefit and we would encourage you to eat and drink until the times stated below.

Admission time: 7:30AM

For both morning and afternoon operation you have to come at 7:30am.  This is to ensure that the list will run efficiently if your procedure should be brought forward.  However, you may be waiting for a few hours for your surgery as well due to theatre delay and we apologise for this.

Morning Operation

  • Do not eat after 2am.
  • You may drink still water only until 6 am.
  • Do not chew gum on the day.
  • You must arrange for an adult to accompany you home and recommend  you spend the first night with someone else in case you should feel unwell.

Afternoon Operation

  • You can have light breakfast until 6am.
  • You can have small sips of water until the time of your surgery.
  • Do not chew gum on the day.
  • You must arrange for an adult to accompany you home and recommend  you spend the first night with someone else in case you should feel unwell.

Notes

General Information

Remove all jewellery, nail polish and acrylic nail before you arrive.

It may be helpful to have painkillers at home.  Your doctor or nurse will advise which painkillers are suitable.

Bring your inhaler, if you have one, and any medications that you would normally take on the day.

Wear loose, comfortable clothing.  Your operated limb may be in a bulky plaster after your operation.

Do not bring valuables with you. There are small lockers available to store your personal belongings for your clothes, wallet and mobile.

Bring something to read, as you may have to wait before going into theatre.

Please be reminded that due to the nature of emergency trauma, your planned procedure may be cancelled to a later date.  You will be informed by a member of the team as soon as possible.

If you are having your operation under general anaesthesia or sedation you must follow the instructions above. If you do not, your surgery may need to be postponed or cancelled.

If you have any further questions, please contact the Trauma Nurse Coordinator on 07388 718 866
