Fasting before general anaesthetic or sedation

Fasting

If your procedure is being performed under general anaesthetic or sedation, please carefully follow these fasting instructions for your safety.

Important: To ensure your safety, you must not eat or drink for a specific period before your anaesthetic. If these instructions are not followed, your operation will need to be cancelled on the day.

Fasting guidelines:

  • 6 hours before your appointment: Avoid all food and drinks, including soup, sweets, milk, tea, coffee or chewing gum.
  • Up to 2 hours before your appointment: It is important to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
  • After this time: Refrain from consuming anything at all, including water.

Why is fasting important?

Fasting is crucial to prevent complications during your anaesthetic and procedure.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding your anaesthetic, please contact the preoperative assessment team directly on 020 3315 8966.
