Walker Boot Care Advice
Managing Foot / Ankle injuries with Walker Boot
- Your condition has been assessed and felt not to need an operation or plaster cast.
- Continue using the boot that is provided.
- Unless advised otherwise, you can bear as much weight as pain allows when using the boot.
- The boot can be removed for sleeping, washing and doing foot and ankle exercises as instructed by your clinician.
- Take the boot off to do foot and ankle exercises a few times each day to prevent stiffness as per the instructions given.
- Aim to use the boot less and less over the weeks ahead as the injury gradually recovers.
- The Boot should no longer be still needed six weeks after the injury unless you have been advised otherwise.
- Over this time expect swelling, pain and movements to gradually improve.
- There is no need to return the boot to the hospital.
- You are advised against driving for six weeks unless the injury only affects your left leg and the car is automatic and it is safe to drive. You must feel that you are in safe and full control of a vehicle at all times including ability to emergency brake if it should be required. Discussion with your insurance provider should be considered to confirm they will cover you when you return to the road.
